Abstinence and Fasting

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during Lent.  Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by Catholics who are 18; but not yet 59.  Those bound to fast may take one full meatless meal; two smaller meatless meals are permitted to maintain strength, but solid food between meals is not permitted.  Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from fast and abstinence.  Some may also choose additional days to abstain from certain luxuries as a means of focusing on the essentials of life.  Lent is a time to look at what is most important in life and to focus attention on this.
