MARY QUEEN OF SAINTS CATHOLIC ACADEMY NEWS

Christmas Concert Day!  Tuesday, December 18th at 1:30 p.m. and/or 6:30 p.m. at Mother of Perpetual Help Parish, 1414 South 92nd Street.  This day will be very special and very busy.  Students will practice in the morning and perform in the afternoon and evening.  Show your appreciation of our children by coming to one of the two performances.

MQSCA recently received a state report card rating of Significantly Exceeding Expectations (5 stars), the highest level awarded by the state of Wisconsin.  According to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the school has the 3rd highest score of all private schools in the state of Wisconsin.  Also, MQSCA is the only 5-star school in West Allis-West Milwaukee.  Special thanks to our families and parishioners who support our area Catholic school in so many ways.

THE GIVING TREE

Please donate one or more NEW, unwrapped toys and place under the Giving Tree in the vestibule starting today.  Hang an ornament on the tree with your name on it.  Please bring the items by Sunday, December 16th.  Any item of your choice is always appreciated, but the following Toys/items are suggested this year:

Please, NO toys that suggest violence.

Thank you for supporting our outreach to help families in need to more joyfully celebrate Christmas.  Our Human Concerns Committee thanks you for your generosity!  Money donations are also appreciated!

Please make checks payable to:  St. Augustine Church.  Mark the envelope “Giving Tree” and place in the collection basket or drop off at the rectory.

Our Human Concerns Committee will collect and deliver the toys to the Capuchin friars, who will distribute the toys to families served at their two sites:

Capuchin Community Services - Two locations serving the Poor, the Hungry and the Homeless:

House of Peace, 1702 West Walnut Street, Milwaukee, WI  53205  414-933-1300  &  St. Ben’s Community Meal, 1015 North 9th Street, Milwaukee, WI  53233  414-271-0135

SUNDAY'S WORD BOOKLETS

Since the Church’s Year begins with Advent, special books for the readers are already available today in the vesting room.  Certainly all our parish readers must have the Sunday readings at home to conscientiously prepare the readings ahead of time.  Those parishioners who choose to take a Sunday’s Word booklet next Sunday are welcome to do so; the books are useful in many ways, such as reading the Sunday passages before that Sunday as preparation for mass, and after that Sunday, as continued reflection on the readings of Sunday.  Some choose to bring them to mass.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS

There is a special envelope in your November packet.  If you want this flower donation to be a memorial gift for your deceased loved one(s), indicate the name(s) on the envelope.  Only memorial donations will be publicized; these must be returned by Monday, December 17th.

CHRISTMAS CALENDAR RAFFLE

Our parish will hold a calendar raffle from December 2018 through January 6th, 2019 with daily prizes ranging from $50.00 - $500.00.  Each calendar costs $20.00.  Envelopes with a calendar for each family to purchase are in the vestibule.  More are available in the vestibule or rectory.  We encourage all parishioners to participate in the raffle by purchasing and selling calendars.  A $7,000.00 profit is our goal.  To achieve this, we need to sell 500 calendars.  Buy and Sell!

2018 CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP APPEAL

Thus far $9,565.00 contributed; only $435.00 needed to meet our goal of $10,000.00.  Let’s meet our goal by December 31st.

THE PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY MINISTRY

The Peanut Butter & Jelly Ministry announces their 10th anniversary!

They have made 180 PBJ Sandwiches monthly for the Gathering Food Site since February 2008.  Always needed:  grape jelly, large jars of creamy peanut butter or cash donations to buy the bread or other items.  Place in Sleeping Bag containers in vestibule.  We are looking for new volunteers to add to our on-call list.  They would help make the sandwiches monthly on each 2nd Saturday morning for about an hour.  If you would like more information, please call Jackie Ellington at 414-327-4625.

PRAYER & WORSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE

A current need surfaced.  We need new choir members, servers (children and adults) and also Eucharistic ministers.  Parishioners should carefully and prayerfully consider if they are qualified to fulfill some of these much needed ministries in our parish.  Contact the rectory if interested!

ENVISIONING OUR FUTURE

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has been planning to cluster the West Milwaukee parish and the eastern parishes of West Allis. Below are the links to the documents for the information they have collected with the assistance and involvement of parish member volunteers from St. Florian, Holy Assumption, St. Augustine and St. Rita.  Please read the data and attend one of the upcoming meetings to better explain everything and to ask questions of these representatives that you may have.  The information and meetings are vitally important for the future of all of these parishes.  Ideally, we would like you to attend our meeting; but if there are time restraints, we understand and feel it is vitally important that you attend at least one of the meetings.  There will be more meetings in 2018.  Please watch for those dates and times.

Thank you for all of those in attendance at the 2016 and 2017 meetings and our hope is that you participated by offering ideas and suggestions to make this transition happen smoothly.  Please continue to read through the information contained in the above links as more meetings will occur in the near future and please be sure to check our website for the dates on those meetings too.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

This process of bringing non-baptized adults into the Catholic community has been used in the USA since 1988 - almost 30 years.  Some Catholics are familiar with the process, and there are some who hardly know it exists.  Here in our parish earlier this year, two adults were baptized, confirmed and made their First Holy Communion during the Easter Vigil.  There is an adapted rite known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) used for children who have reached the age of reason and are entering into the Catholic Church.  Also related to this process of RCIA is the reception of adults baptized into another ecclesial community (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) being received into the Catholic community through Confirmation and First Communion; we had one such candidate during the Easter Season.  More can be learned about this Catholic ritual in the Catholic Update inserted in today’s bulletin.  Also a reminder:  any adults interested in being baptized or received into the Catholic church - contact the pastor soon, as sessions would begin in early autumn.  Usually from September or October to Easter is enough time for the necessary sessions.  Please contact Barbara Krieger, our Pastoral Associate, to register or ask any questions.  She can be reached at her office at 414-541-7515, ext. 39 or via her cell phone at 414-364-5566.
